Fears & Concerns

You might be worried about medical costs, finding infant care or what will happen if your child has a seizure at school. Or you could be concerned about the future - whether your child will be able to drive, work or have a family. Look at some of the entries in the Epilepsy Foundation’s Heroes Among Us program, talk online with other parents in our Parents Helping Parents eCommunity, or get to know other parents through your local Epilepsy Foundation. You’ll see that many others share your fears and concerns.

Most children with epilepsy live full and active lives. However, there are many challenges. Learning all you can about epilepsy will help you know what to expect and how you can best help your child. Jennie Solomkin, a young woman who was diagnosed in sixth grade, wrote this during her senior year of high school, as she began to look forward to college and pursuing a career as an educational lawyer or special education teacher:

“I eventually came to understand that the number of hospital bracelets I’ve amassed cannot compare to the number of great accomplishments I’ve achieved since my diagnosis. I believe my acceptance and confrontation of my disability has helped me consider it a guide through my journey, pointing me in a direction in life.”
